New Chief at the Center for Artificial Joint Replacement

Dr. Stefan Schmidl joins the team at Sportklinik Hellersen and takes over as Head of Endoprosthetics Hellersen and the Robotics Center

Dr. Stefan Schmidl is the new Chief of the Center for Artificial Joint Replacement at Sportklinik Hellersen. He joined the team at the specialist clinic on May 1 and brings with him a wealth of expertise in arthroplasty. He succeeds Chief Dr. Joachim Hagenah, who established the special department for artificial joint replacement at Sportklinik Hellersen in 2004. "In over 20 years, my team and I have built up and developed endoprosthetics at Sportklinik Hellersen. I am delighted that a competent, highly qualified successor has been found in Dr. Schmidl and I am sure that Sportklinik Hellersen will benefit from his extensive expertise," says Dr. Joachim Hagenah.

Dr. Stefan Schmidl is a proven specialist in the use and replacement of artificial joints. With the experience of several thousand successfully implanted endoprostheses and comprehensive surgical expertise, he routinely performs even the most complex procedures.
His career has taken him to the most renowned endoprosthetics centers in Europe, where he not only operated, but also led teams and successfully implemented innovative treatment concepts. In addition to his clinical work, he also worked scientifically in the field of arthroplasty. His research focused on the service life of prostheses, infections and hip joint dislocations. This refers to the dislocation of the hip prosthesis during certain movements or after a fall. Dr. Stefan Schmidl is currently contributing his expertise to an international team and is working on a consensus for fast-track in arthroplasty. Fast-track is a concept for improving the processes surrounding arthroplasty patients. It includes preparation for the operation, optimized process management in the operating theatre and intensive and early mobilization under physiotherapeutic guidance.

"The fascinating thing about arthroplasty is the opportunity to noticeably improve mobility and therefore quality of life, to be able to pursue hobbies again or even just walk around the city without pain," explains Dr. Stefan Schmidl. After years of restriction and pain, many patients are able to move much better again within a short space of time thanks to surgical treatment, and are even able to enjoy a pain-free everyday life.

The arthroplasty specialist says of the medical profession itself: "It's nice to be able to help other people through your work. I am also passionate about manual work and, as an arthroplasty specialist, I am lucky to be able to combine both activities in my job. My first points of contact with medicine and orthopaedics were in my family and at the Bundeswehr hospital in Leipzig during my basic training."

At Sportklinik Hellersen, the Chief particularly likes the high level of specialization, which also corresponds to his own vision. "This is exactly what I was looking for. A specialist clinic where the focus is on endoprosthetics in order to achieve the best results and quality," explains Dr. Stefan Schmidl. He was already familiar with Sportklinik Hellersen from his time at the Endo-Klinik Hamburg. "We are delighted to welcome Dr. Schmidl as Chief at Sportklinik Hellersen and are sure that he and his outstanding expertise in endoprosthetics will be a great asset to our clinic," says Dirk Burghaus, CEO of Sportklinik Hellersen.

As Head of the Robotics Centre at Sportklinik Hellersen, Dr. Stefan Schmidl already has extensive experience in the field of robot-assisted surgery. He is an expert in the use of this innovative technology, particularly in knee endoprosthetics. "Robot-assisted surgery allows even more precise, individual adaptation to the patient. And we are only at the beginning here. In the future, the combination with artificial intelligence will certainly open up further new possibilities from which patients will benefit," reports Dr. Stefan Schmidl.

In his private life, he focuses on his family and sport. "The whole family loves the mountains, both in winter for alpine skiing and in summer for hiking," says Dr. Stefan Schmidl. Through his children, he is also involved in athletics, figure skating and, more recently, ice hockey.
